8 May 04   Nemesis II
Last night lili and I finally made it to Nemesis. We were both deeply impressed to put it mildly. A huge amount of effort has clearly been put into the whole experience, and the attention to detail throughout is striking. Above all, it is a welcoming, BDSM orientated event with a minimal of rules and fuss. [more...]
2 May 04   What is subspace?
Simple answer is that it's a type of hypnotic trance, where the sub's attention becomes extremely concentrated on the dom (and may well only be aware of the dom.) Their eyes follow you round the room, they become less or even non-verbal, and the ego parts of their personality get turned off: their attention is all outside of themselves and focussed on you. Although both may happen in one session, especially in an SM scene with strong D/s overtones, subspace shouldn't be confused with an endorphin high. Anyone who's seen both together and separately will know what I mean. [more...]
13 Apr 04   "when i have abused my freedom"
Bondage is a source of wonderful metaphors for D/s, and the captivity aspect of bondage is D/s turned into a physical barrier. Cages are probably the most commonly used captivity tool in BDSM, and in a recent thread on bondage.com, phylassia posted a little gem that I'd like to share: "i see being caged ... as a place for punishment, to be confined when i have abused my freedom." [more...]
27 Feb 04   The UK is the top bondage nation?
According to the Durex Global Sex Survey for 2003 (!), 38% of UK respondents had tried handcuffs or bondage to enhance sex - higher than any of the other countries represented. They say "more than 150,000 lovers worldwide took part in what we believe is the largest ever online survey exploring sexual attitudes and behaviour across the globe." [more...]
28 Jan 04   San Francisco
lili and I were in San Francisco last week (which partly explains the lack of a proper Weekly Events List post.) Apart from a lot of the touristy things (cable cars, Golden Gate bridge, Fisherman's Wharf) we managed to take in some of the BDSM sights too. [more...]
20 Sep 03   Underworld
We went to see Underworld last night, and I was both impressed and disappointed. Werewolves vs Vampires shot in a Gothic style as a underground war that's gone on for centuries. On the face of it, what's not to like? [more...]
28 May 03   How big is BDSM in this country?
Yesterday lili and I were talking about the number of people now involved in the public BDSM and Fetish Scenes in the UK, participating in websites like IC or just getting on with it with their partner in private. However you look at it, the figures are rather large ... [more...]
21 May 03   In the Matrix, in the Scene or in with Mary W.?
There's been a few references to "The Matrix" films already in the weblogs on IC and I expect references to it will crop up again after the second film, "The Matrix Reloaded" starts appearing in UK cinemas from today. These films have a bunch of themes which it's tempting to relate to BDSM and our interaction with the mainstream, vanilla world, including some of the intolerance and demands for conformity that I found in my inbox this morning. [more...]
12 May 03   "Secretary" film reviewed
The distributors of "Secretary" sent me a copy to review last week, and there's a copy of my review below. The film goes on UK "general" release on Friday 16th May, mainly at art house cinemas. Well worth seeing. [more...]
11 May 03   "The Reunion" by Laura Antoniou
Well after 250 pages I've decided to put aside "The Reunion". I very rarely leave books unfinished - and this time I've stopped at one of the day boundaries just in case - but I really can't take any more of it. [more...]
