| 29 Feb 08 The Japanese have a name for it ... |
| "Shinrin-yoku" is literally "forest-air bathing" and means taking in the woodland atmosphere. | | 25 Feb 08 Woodland survey and pictures |
| I had another trip down to the wood at the weekend, armed with GPS
receiver, spade, and camera. I've received a proper plan of the boundary as
part of the draft contract, but it doesn't show the relative positions of
places inside the wood, so I wanted to get a better picture of it all in my
head, and look for signs of spring. [more...]
| | 22 Feb 08 Longer than you'd think... |
| How long have the English, Scots, Welsh and Irish been in the British Isles?
At school, we were told that the Celts had turned up with the Iron Age, maybe
around 300 BC and not long before the Romans came and conquered them in turn.
The peoples who built Stone Henge and left bronze axe heads had been wiped out
by the Celts, but when Imperial Rome gave up, the Celts - now called
Britons - were left to their own devices. Waves of Angles, Saxons and Jutes
from North Germany and Denmark then invaded, driving the Britons into
Cornwall, Wales, Brittany and Scotland - so only Anglo-Saxons were left in
England [more...]
| | 20 Feb 08 Bridgewood contract and plan |
| I've now received the draft contract and title plan for Bridgewood, and I
understand the local searches are being done. Hopefully we can complete at
the start of next month. Getting an accurate map of the property prompts the
idea of doing more detailed mapping myself, and I'm thinking of doing a
rough GPS survey to identify some of the features such as the glade
shown in my first woodland
post and the central clearing. [more...]
| | 12 Feb 08 Woodland and BDSM links |
| Yesterday I posted about making an offer for 19 acres of
woodland.
In researching this whole subject over the last few months I've
collected quite a lot of relevant links, which I'm going to go through now
for future reference and to give a broader picture of what's involved. [more...]
| | 11 Feb 08 Buying some woodland |
| I've had my offer to buy some woodland accepted. I've been looking at
various pieces of woodland since the autumn, but this one, Bridgewood, has been the best of
the bunch: 19 acres of broadleaf woodland on the southern end of the
Cheshire plain between Manchester and Birmingham. The wood is very secluded
- it's surrounded by streams and ditches on all sides, with a single
access point -
and includes a lot of young shrubby growth so it's also well screened. [more...]
| | 5 Feb 08 The first Manchester Munch |
| Next Saturday is the 10th Anniversary Manchester Munch and I thought I'd
write a bit about the first Manchester Munch and how it came about. [more...]
| | 21 Jan 08 Nemesis and the weekend |
This weekend was a marathon for lili and popi, with a drive down to London for Purrr.
As Purrr is a women-only event,
I stayed at home, hacking a website about and eating pizza
On Saturday night, we all headed over to Nemesis II in West Yorkshire, which seems to be on the way up again. [more...]
| | 16 Jan 08 The Desire for Purpose |
| Recently
I've got interested in general motivations: what is the most general
framework for why people do things? Are people following specific drives imposed by evolution, or is there some universal, such as
Nietzsche's claim that everyone's
motivation is The Will to Power. But how can that be true in a world with
consensual submissives? [more...]
| | 13 Jan 08 Club Lash and the Manchester Munch |
| This weekend I went to Club Lash with lili and popi on Friday, and the three of us dropped into the Manchester Munch for a few minutes on Saturday. We've not been to any scene events in Manchester since the autumn, and the effects of the smoking ban are really sinking in with no "smoke hangover" the next morning for a non-smoker like me. [more...]
