Lincoln Castle and Prison

Lincon Castle has been a local seat of power since the time of the Normans, and its medieval dungeon and later Victorian prison are open to the public. In the mid-nineteenth century, prisoners were kept under the "separate system" and denied all contact with each other, using solitary cells, a rule of silence and hoods. The prison chapel survives as a remarkable example of this, with prisoners kept apart by wooden partitions.

Buildings:
The exteriors of the 19th century prison buildings in the castle grounds, and the separate-system chapel.
Cells and Dungeons:
The contrasting Victorian prison and medieval dungeon in the castle.
