20 Aug 09Cabinet of Curiosities
This Trompe l'oeil ("trick the eye") was painted by Domenico Remps in about 1675, and is in the "Opificio delle Pietre dure" in Florence. It's an oil painting, but it appears to be a Cabinet of Curiosities, holding the collection of interesting objects amassed by a renaissance gentleman. Presumably, it was meant to hang on a wall and be a "virtual" stand-in for such a collection.
