11 Sep 11   Trolllllllllllll!!!!!!!! (... Hunter)
I saw Troll Hunter on Friday and thought it was pretty good :) Suspenseful in the woodland hunting scenes and funny in other places. It's also a great advert for the dramatic scenery of Norway. [more...]
30 Oct 10   Saw 3D
mia and I went to see Saw 3D yesterday. This was advertised as the last in the series, and they were very much milking the blood and gore. That aside, there were some cool pieces of kit. I blogged about Saw III back in 2006, and the franchise has incorporated more and more BDSM cuffs etc over the time since then. Stand out items this time included a neck brace and a platform [more...]
28 Mar 09   "The Damned United"
Just go back from seeing The Damned United about Brian Clough's 44 days at Leeds United, the latest drama based on recent history with a screenplay by Peter Morgan and Michael Sheen in a leading role. (The others have been Frost/Nixon, The Queen, The Deal.) [more...]
17 Mar 09   Bronson the prisoner, in Bronson the film
I went to see Bronson last night and was very impressed, especially by Tom Hardy in the title role. Despite the nay-sayers, it doesn't glamorise Bronson. The image of Most Violent Prisoner is mesmerising in the way Hardy portrays it, but the reality that's also shown is, as one governor says, just ridiculous.
23 Nov 08   The Baader Meinhof Complex
I went to see The Baader Meinhof Complex on Friday. Well worth two and a half hours or subtitles, as I have zero German apart from the odd "schadenfreude" etc. Apparently the film is very controversial in Germany, but it neither glamorised nor trivialised it all to me. [more...]
11 Mar 07   Being Superman. Being Clark Kent.
We've watched Tarantino's "Kill Bill" films this weekend, and this is a short post I meant to write after seeing Volume II in the cinema. It's about identity and M/s. [more...]
3 Jan 07   The Pet
I got hold of a copy of "The Pet" this week, an independent film which has been hyped online over the past year or so, especially on mailing lists and web boards about BDSM. I'm not at all impressed, but it does include some references to elements of the ownership subculture so here goes... [more...]
3 Dec 06   The Prestige
I was impressed enough by Pan's Labyrinth last Saturday, but it didn't prepare me for The Prestige, set in the world of 19th century stage magic. It's hard to write a review without including spoilers, so I'll just say go and see it in a cinema before its run finishes! [more...]
26 Nov 06   Pan's Labyrinth
The three of us went to see Pan's Labyrinth last night: what a treat! A very adult fairy-tale: violent, fantastical, innocent, knowing, and altogether surprising.
28 Oct 06   Saw III
It's been Gross-out Film Week here in the House of Tanos, with DVD showings of Hostel, Saw, Saw II and then the opening night of Saw III at the cinema yesterday. Saw III wins the prize though. [more...]
