21 May 06   Slave Markets
I've now started a page collecting images and descriptions of Ancient and Orientalist slave markets. Currently it's mostly the paintings and engravings I've scanned in the past, plus some contemporary descriptions.
13 May 06   "An Intercepted Correspondence"
Since last week a copy of John Frederick Lewis's "An Intercepted Correspondence" has been hanging above the fireplace in my study. I originally bought the print in the summer of 1997, and it's been in more than one frame and hung on several walls since. My view of it and its wider context has changed too, and I'd like to put my current thoughts down, now that I can sit here and glance up at it as I write. [more...]
11 May 06   Another night in the stocks
Last month I posted about some modern paintings by Nicolay Bessonov which included stocks being used to hold female captives in prisons (rather than just being used for public humiliation.) Now I've found a couple of strikingly similar harem pictures involving stocks from the 19th century. [more...]
7 Apr 06   Nicolay Bessonov
Someone very kindly sent me the URL of some of Nicolay Bessonov's paintings the other day, featuring female wretches (well, witches in context ;) ) imprisoned and in hard bondage. [more...]
31 Mar 06   Skin Two 55 and Marquis 37
Skin Two issue 55 and Marquis 37 both came in the post today, so I've sat down this evening and had a good look at them side by side. [more...]

26 Feb 06   Themes in Household D/s
This is my second draft essay about my personal style of D/s, which I'm calling "Household D/s." Last month I dealt with Roles in HDS, and here I provide a brief overview of some other themes that I keep in mind. [more...]
20 Feb 06   "The economic case for polygamy"
An "economic" analysis of polygyny has appeared on Slate, written by Tim Harford for the FT earlier this month. He makes the point that polygyny is really a way for wives to get "high status" husbands (ie husbands with access to something that people value - wealth, fame, skill etc), even if it means sharing them: "wives decided they'd prefer one-quarter of a billionaire." This is about the economics of status and desirability, not really about money itself: so it applies to being a film star, or a good father, or [more...]
5 Feb 06   popi
popi has been living in my house for the past month, and tonight she has officially joined my wonderful lili as part of the household. I've discovered a lot even during these first few weeks, and the similarities between starting a poly D/s relationship and starting Enslavement have been quite striking: trust, transparency and stability are the central issues in both contexts.
