29 Oct 08   Bridgewood photos and video
I've collected some recent pictures and made a short video, highlighting aspects of the work going on. This concentrates on the Glade and the felling of large trees ("standards") I've been doing there. [more...]
17 Oct 08   Autumn in Bridgewood
Autumn is an ill-defined season. Astronomically, and therefore on the BBC weather forecasts, it begins with the equinox about the 21st of September and finishes at the solstice in late December. But colloquially, summer lasts into August and winter is definitely here by November, and autumn fills in the gap. I used to think of all this in terms of dates and months, but now I've gone back to the old Anglo-Saxon derived "Fall of Leaf" rather than "Autumn" that we acquired from French. [more...]
21 Jul 08   Lancaster Castle
popi and I visited Lancaster Castle on Saturday. The building is still a working court house and prison, despite parts of it dating back to the 11th century. Access is by guided tour only, but our guide ("Graham") turned out to be excellent: animated, engaging, pitching it equally at amateur historians like me and ten year olds from Peru (I'm not kidding ;) ). [more...]
11 Jul 08   iPhone 3G first impressions
I don't usually go for the latest gadgets but I've been thinking of getting a phone that's practical to use with the web for a while. My old contract has just finished it's minimum term and so the iPhone 3G - launched today - was a natural choice, and I managed to get one of the first batch. [more...]
30 Jun 08   Anglesey pictures
I've uploaded a photostream of pictures taken on Anglesey earlier this month, showing several historical: Beaumaris Gaol, Beaumaris Court House, Beaumaris Castle, Bryn Celli Ddu burial mound and Din Lligwy hut group.
23 Jun 08   Spankd
Saturday was our (me, lili, popi and charlie) first visit to Spankd in Cheshire, and we were very impressed :) [more...]
18 Jun 08   Early summer in Bridgewood
I've not posted about the wood for a couple of months, but a fair bit has been happening. We've had several work trips and a couple of "social" trips with three or four of us, and the basic layout of the wood is starting to emerge via spade, bowsaw, axe and chainsaw. [more...]
17 May 08   Scold's bridles and stocks of Cheshire trip
Last month popi and I went on a day trip to museums with Scold's Bridles. For some reason, Cheshire has a several of these within a short distance of Manchester. We also took in some village stocks and a gibbet cage. These are interesting historically and as hard bondage, but they're inspiration for equipment to install at Bridgewood one day, and also for attachments for my headcage. [more...]
11 Apr 08   Cognitive Dissonance and Monty Hall
Cognitive Dissonance is the idea that contradictions make your head hurt and you strive to remove them. The Monty Hall problem is a surprising consequence of applying probability theory to a 1950s US game show. And it now turns out that a bunch of experiments about Cognitive Dissonance were done without understanding The Monty Hall problem. In fact, they can be explained away just using probability (maybe.) [more...]
7 Apr 08   Pheasants, Photos and Plans
I went to the wood on Saturday and did some more work laying out woodland tracks (rides) and taking some photographs of signs of spring. I've also written a page describing outline plans for the wood and where I'm going with it. [more...]
