Jack Straw or jack boots?

Posted by Tanos on Thu 29 Sep 05, 10:54 AM

What is happening to this country? Jack Straw was heckled yesterday by an 80-year old labour party member who fled the Nazis in 1937. The man was manhandled out of the conference, as was the member sitting next to him who told the stewards they were out of order. Then the 80-year old was detained by police using the Terrorism Act when he tried to reenter - so much (again) for these draconian laws just being rushed through for dealing with terrorists. Today we get one of Tony Bliar's meaningless and too-late to be useful apologies.

It feels like this government is systematically destroying our freedoms in ways even Thatcher didn't manage: the so-called religious hatred law (which was designed by the MCB to curb criticism of religion), doing away with Habeus Corpus for "terrorism" (eg being an 80-year old heckler at a conference?), and now proposing to ban SM pornography even though they admit there is no evidence it does a shred of harm.

We seem to be descending into some kind of puritanical police-state, combining the worst of Blunkett-style Christian hypocrisy with 1970s pseudo-feminist sex-is-bad nonsense. And a Labour goverment scurrying around doing all this to us? A Labour government?
