LateXtra magazine and fishy Skin Two statistics

Posted by Tanos on Tue 16 Aug 05, 9:16 PM

I got hold of a copy of this quarter's Skin Two LateXtra magazine today (Issue 21, Autumn 2005.) Along the usual mix of adverts, event reviews and adverts for Skin Two products, it has some odd claims about website popularity...

LateXtra is a complement to Skin Two magazine and is billed as "Britain's Free Fetish Magazine." You can pick up a copy from a lot of fetish / BDSM shops around the country (I usually get mine from Vintage to Fetish)

This quarter's issue has an equal mix of articles and pure adverts. Three pages of news articles (largely about advertisers in the magazine) do include mentions of the Rope Bondage Peer Workshops and the SFC's Night of the Senses.

BDSM / fetish parties visited and photograped are Club Extremm in Exeter (photos of flogging, submission, cages and ropework), Dominion at the Manor near Telford (photos of hoods, blindfolds and remote controlled electrics), and the Lush Love Sunday afternoon / evening event in Nottingham (photos of ropework, flogging and violet wands.)

There's also an enthusiastic two page article on Unfettered's amazingly successful KinkFest2 in London last month :)

I should also mentioned the revamped www.skintwo.com which gets a full page ad on the inside back cover, and is billed as "the world's favourite fetish community." (One of those slippery tag lines like British Airways' "the world's favourite airline" ;) )

There's also some "advertorial" in the first page of news, based on independent statistics from www.alexa.com - an Amazon subsidiary that measures the popularity of websites in a reasonably reliable way.

Skintwo.com is proudly claimed to be the 98,252th most popular website in the world (looking today, the 3 month average has slipped back a bit to 105,046th) and they compare it to www.Marquis.de , www.Fetish.com and www.Londonfetishscene.com who all do worse.

But they don't mention Informed Consent (20,845) or bondage.com (4,832) even though both sites have a mix of BDSM and fetish, just like Skin Two.

I wonder why they missed us out then? 8-)

(If you're curious, here is a graph of the last year's change in IC's Alexa ranking, compared to Skin Two. We don't do bad for a site that Skin Two has consistently avoided ever linking to...)
