What I did on my holidays...

Posted by Tanos on Thu 23 Jun 05, 11:35 PM

Some of you might have noticed that lili and I have been away for a week ... (that's for the benefit of anyone reading this in a year's time: IC has been down for a week until earlier today :( ) I'm going to make some weblog posts about places we went (during Leather Pride Weekend in New York) but I've a bunch of shorter things to catch up about.

First is that the last minute fixes I did to IC before going away last week only half worked: the rebuilt machine was sat there happily all week with it's shiny new disks saying "so, what now boss? :)" but the networking equipment I was having to use to get it back online overnight on Wednesday went down under the first afternoon load of IC visitors.

Now that I'm back in the country, I've put it all back where it belongs and we're running as normal.

I also took the opportunity to double the memory of the main IC machine - which makes it better able to deal with high loads and do something else in the background (like process log files and backups.)

Since the Slave Register website runs off the same server, it's been down for a week too. I've been moving the Register onto a version of the IC software, and since that was ready to go as soon as I got back from New York (I'm a bit like the shoemaker in the "Elves and the Shoemaker" for laying things out ready for "tomorrow") I've gone live with it today too.

The Register has been a bit of a sleeping giant for a few years, gradually building up registrations until there are now almost 70,000 of them. Part of the redesign is to broaden the scope beyond M/s, to better include people in other styles of ownership, property or service relationships who nevertheless have some interest or fetish for marking or registration.

Despite IC and the Register's absence (which I got to share with you, dear reader, via wireless internet in the hotel room ;) ) lili and I have cooked up some more ideas for where to go to expand the Register into a more general D/s site, and how to get IC working on a much more robust basis (basically, by having two identical machines online, with a live backup from one to the other. That way I can remotely switch to the backup box if there is any problem with the main machine.)

I'm going to try to write up some of the shops and events we visited (Gloria Brame's talk at Paddles, the Leather Pride Night and Folsom Street East, and a meeting at TES about punishment and training.)

But for now I'm going offline to try to cut down some more jet lag :)
