Tanos's bio

Tanos acquired an interest in what we'd now call BDSM when he was a child, with the help of Let's Pretend games, films, and books. He devoured fiction and history from periods with slaves and ticked off this country's castles with good dungeons, one by one. Then he discovered (largely inaccurate) psychological accounts of "sadomasochism", tested the waters with vanilla girlfriends with varying degrees of success, and then finally stumbled on the alt.sex.bondage internet newsgroup in 1993, where munches were spreading across the US, where people talked about relationships built around BDSM and even living as master and slave.

After a few more vanilla relationships, and one that turned into D/s for a while, it wasn't until 1997 that he started visiting a UK IRC chatroom and went to his first munch, at the White Horse in London.

Just before Christmas 1997, he started the website which grew into Informed Consent, with a page of links to UK-related BDSM and fetish websites. In February 1998 he organised the first Manchester Munch, which was the second regular munch series to start in the UK and is now the longest running. He co-organised it for two years, until stepping down at the February 2000 anniversary munch.

During 2000 his efforts shifted to Master/slave relationships: he created The Slave Register and began writing about M/s. He met and collared lili, and established an M/s relationship and household. As well as BDSM, they organised face-to-face M/s groups and managed several mailing lists and web boards, and developed the ideas of Internal Enslavement to clarify TPE and M/s. In later years, they explored more of the BDSM scene and helped organise events like Kinklusive.

At the start of 2006, popi joined the household, with her love of captivity and prison museums that she shared with Tanos, and together the three of them explored how poly M/s works.

Tanos has enjoyed combining BDSM with travel, including trips to San Francisco in 1998 and 2004, to New York in 2005 for the Leather Pride Weekend, and to the Master/slave Conference in Washington in 2007 as an invited speaker. He also includes castles, museums, and other sites with BDSM significance on otherwise vanilla trips.

In the UK, Tanos has lost count of the number of munches he's visited, and has been to all sizes of clubs from the basement of pubs to the Rubber Ball and Torture Garden. He's attended or presented at Pervefest and Kinkfest 1, 2 and 3 in London. In Manchester, he proposed and helped organise the Kinklusive weekend of workshops and club events in 2005.

Tanos's Victorian house in Manchester is spread over four storeys from cellars (with two cells and his collection of BDSM furniture) to top-floor study (with most of his collection of books and smaller BDSM equipment.) He also owns Bridgewood, a 19-acre woodland in northern Shropshire, which he has been developing for wildlife and for BDSM uses.

In the summer of 2008, Tanos's relationships with lili and popi ended after more than 8 and 2 years of living together respectively, although he is still on good terms with both of them.

During 2009 he explored more of the possibilities of Open Air BDSM, and in the autumn wrote the Ownership & Possession (O&P) Manifesto - a new structure built from familiar D/s and M/s concepts. He met mia in late December, and subsequently collared her in February 2010.
